Cool Math Games:: Place Value Game Idea (1st – 10th place)
I made a grid on a long piece of white paper, 10 spots designated for learning first through tenth place. I had the boys pick out ten little animals from their collection and line them up on the table. Then I told them the following story which was a great place value game for young boys.
“There was a BIG race in the animal kingdom – it was THE EVENT of the year. (insert all of the animals they had chosen) were competing. The rhino was the reporter and he did an excellent job; every stumble, every water break, every break to munch on grass, he saw it and reported on it.
When Mr. Rhino went to submit all of his paper work he tripped and fell, causing all of his hard work and organization to scatter – AND he lost one piece of information! So while all of his information is accurate, it’s up to us to organize the animals into the right sequence and solve the mystery as to which animals information got lost.
When I read you the randomly organized information Mr. Rhino put together about the animals, can you put the animal in it’s right spot?
(I then explained the ten place grid I had made and that each spot represented one place from first through tenth.)
The Grasshopper shocked the crowds by taking first place.
The Panther was having an off day, and he placed tenth.
The Alligator spent much of the race sun bathing, and as a result he placed fifth.
The Lion was seconds behind the Grasshopper, placing second.
The Monkey and her happy baby came in fourth place.
The Snake slithered into seventh.
The Zebra meandered in at ninth place.
The Toucan flew into third place.
The Tiger had a sore foot and placed sixth place.
Which animal is left over and what did he place? (It was the Lemur, in sixth place)
They had so much fun with this place value game, and once we finished putting the animals in order I had them write the corresponding number that the animal had placed underneath.

Did you make this up? I'm quite impressed! Do you think maybe you inherited your brains and imagination from me???…she asked hopefully!!
I have two creative parents, so half of it comes from you
