Chapter 24 - Along the Great River
Using the boys plastic cowboy and Indians we reenacted the scene where the lady describes some of the happenings in the St Lawrence River (with quite a bit of embellishment – but had they been older we would have made it a bit more historically accurate!) A long sheet of blue paper was our St. Lawrence River.
Chapter 25 - Rivers in the Sea
Talked about currents and sea tides and watched some clips so they could get an idea of what we were discussing.
Chapter 26 - Paddle Finds a New Friend
Being so close to finishing the book I went back to the boys all time favorite activity since we started this book – soap carving. I gave them each a bar of Ivory soap and they carved their own Paddle again and spent hours playing with their soap creations outside.
Chapter 27 – On a Wharf
To celebrate the completion of the book we popped some popcorn and the boys watched part 2 and part 3 of Paddle to the Sea on You Tube.
I am using Paddle to the Sea by Holling Clancy Holling with my 3 and 4 year old sons for our “school” this year. Shared above are the activities we have done this week relating to each chapter. Related books and activities are geared towards the young ages of my own children but are easily adaptable for older children.
Using a large piece of poster board I created a rough map as seen on the last page of the book. This map is referenced daily to track Paddle’s adventures.

Hey Jessica! I am thinking about doing this through the summer with the kids – will it be too much for a 3 year old?
Wesley was a new 3 yr old when we did this and he enjoyed it a lot
The "chapters" are short (one page) and the activities all grabbed his attention. The soap carving is STILL talked about – it was a huge hit with them!
