Homeschool Journal 1/18/13
2013
In our homeschool this week …
We have done a lot of reading this week, finishing off two books {added to our list of favorite chapter books for boys} and almost through several more. I kind of like being in the middle of several read alouds or audio books at one time – we can pick which one we feel like at the time.
We worked on thank you notes, made up a fun new math game for going over addition and spent one day at the court house for the adoption of our friends new son and then celebrating with them afterwards. It was a precious day!
My favorite thing this week was …
My mentor and I started our weekly meetings again this week. We took a long break over the holidays and are now getting back into our routine. I love her dearly and am so thankful for her wise and thoughtful ways and the time she invests in me. While her own educational choices for her children are different than mine for my children it has been excellent – and truly invaluable – to have her perspective on education.
I’m cooking …
Months ago some good friends treated us to a meal at Canoe. It was amazing. Part of their bread basket was olive bread. It was so unique and SO good! This week I decided to make olive bread. While it turned out good, it wasn’t olive-y enough. I’m determined to perfect this olive bread recipe.
I’m grateful for …
A sweet, sweet brother who thinks my stone-age phone that holds a charge for all of 45 minutes needs an upgrade and has purchased a new phone for me. It arrives tomorrow. I am giddy with excitement and so thankful for his thoughtfulness.
I love both my brothers, and wish we weren’t scattered all over North America! {…and my sister … on the other side of the world!}

Jessica, I used to make an artisan bread that was a Panera recipe http://www.food.com/recipe/panera-kalamata-olive-bread-282060 that was quite olive-y. I think I used whatever olives I could get ahold of as I was making it in South America and didn’t have Kalamata olives available to me.

Thanks!! I will try out this recipe too
I think my problem was the olives I used – since Kalamata are available here I will have to try with that. I just used what I had in the fridge
Jess, you just amaze me. For reals. You inspire me and challenge me (in the best possible ways!) in how you work with your boys and come up with ways to be intentionally different from what the rest of the world is doing. I love it. Thank you for sharing your journey.
