Cool Math Games:: Reinforcing Shape Recognition
Wanting to help reinforce Wesley’s ( age 4) shape recognition skills, while combining it with his hands on learning style, I was inspired to make up this cool math game for him.
I made him a simple graphic with each of these four shapes; square, circle, triangle and rectangle. I then wrote a number beside each one, gave him a large bag and asked him to walk around the house collecting items the right amount of items for each shape.
Judah (age 5) was excited about the “treasure hunt” and jumped in to help Wes out. I was impressed with their creativity; an accurately folded blanket was counted as a square item, a roof to a play house was a triangle, the base of a picture frame provided a circle – they searched high and low throughout many rooms in the house and yielded a creative, and correct, assortment of shapes – and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the process!
The one rule I did make up for the game was that they could not use two of the same item for the same shape (so only one book for a rectangle, etc.)
If you want to play some cool math games feel free to save this image and use with your kids too – you can either open it in a mobile device as an image for them to look at or print it from your printer or have it printed as a 5×7 image at a local photo print shop.
