How to Make Silly Putty
2012
Three weeks ago we made up a batch of this homemade silly putty and the boys have thoroughly enjoyed playing with it! It is way more fun than play dough – given a couple Army men and some plastic bowls and a big handful of this homemade silly putty they are happy to play for a couple hours.
Our original batch is still going strong, but I’m sure it will get gross soon as it picks up dust and other little bits from the surrounding play area – but it is so easy to make we’ll just toss and whip up another batch as needed.
How to make silly putty
You will need liquid starch {found in the laundry aisle at Walmart} and school glue. Liquid food coloring is also needed to color the silly putty. {What was suppose to have been RED silly putty turned a pretty peach color! Oops!}
The original recipe I saw called for a 1:1 ratio of glue and liquid starch. This DID NOT work for me. It turned out to be too much liquid. I had much better success with a 1:2/3 ratio of glue to liquid starch.
I used three cups of school glue and two cups of liquid starch and a few drops of food coloring. I recommend having extra of both – if it is too wet add more glue, if it is not wet enough add more starch.
Once the concoction is in the bowl you need to mix, and mix, and mix! It works best to stick your hands in and GET MESSY! Squish the mixture back and forth between your hands until it resembles silly putty. It’s remarkable to watch it form in your hands and is so much fun to play with! I have enjoyed playing alongside the boys with this squishy, fun material.
Store the homemade silly putty in an airtight container.
