what we’ve been up to
2013
We are home now, after a week and a half of hotel living, microwave dinners and freezing cold weather. I thought I would be able to keep up with writing on here while we were gone – but it turns out living in a hotel with two active boys takes a lot of effort. I had neither the time nor energy to invest words here. But now we’re back and things will get back on track with the blog!
We had so much fun up north! While we didn’t actually see snow the boys enjoyed the frosty air and the ice.
Here are some pictures from our one and a half weeks in Kentucky.
We explored Fort Duffield – above they are standing on the earthen walls. {after which we saw the signs asking people to not be on them – oops!}
The boys and I discovered a beautiful park and conquered the 150 ice covered stairs to explore the beauty below. There were oodles of flea markets and antique shops in the area and we bought this remote control race car at one shop for $5. It proved to be great fun and entertainment for the boys.Spent some time at this military fitness track – with sit up bars, pull up bars and a climbing rope it kept these two balls of energy busy and happy!
This {above} memorial was at the Veterans cemetery.{left} us at the General Patton museum. {right} one of the cross beams from the World Trade center set up to honor those who died on 9-11. Judah turned 6 while we were there – he requested an extra chapter from the book Paul is reading them {left} and his favorite gift was the watch we gave him. {right} Discovered a Tim Hortons on Fort Knox! Had dinner with a friend I haven’t seen in close to a dozen years – met her children and enjoyed a home cooked meal at her parents home.
SO many antique stores! The boys and I spent a good bit of time exploring the treasures and junk. If I had $110 to spend, I would have bought this first aid box! On the drive home we found an amazing family run Greek restaurant and everyone enjoyed a gyro. Another food stop – the Iron Skillet. A trucker stop restaurant. We were really impressed with the food. My favorite part of our trip was our stop at the South Union Shaker Village. We had just read about the Shaker’s a few weeks ago and when I happened to see that this preserved community was nearby I thought it would be fun for us to stop by.
The buildings were incredible – clean, simple, enormous! and full of items from the Shaker’s, with informative plaques to read and friendly and helpful staff to answer questions. If you’re traveling on I-65 it is worth the twenty-five minutes or so it takes to drive over to see this.
