Several years ago when we gifted our boys books on Christmas day they stopped the gift opening and sat to look through their new books. It was precious and yet also a little frustrating to have that long break between gift opening, so the next year I rethought the approach and came up with what is now one of my favorite Christmas traditions.
All of the books we would gift them for Christmas I place in a basket for Christmas afternoon. They can see the books (though some years I have wrapped them) but they cannot touch. On Christmas afternoon, once the excitement has worn off and the new gifts have been played we will cozy down for some book reading.
I love how much my boys love a good book, and this has been a great way to encourage it and help foster the special-ness that is to be found in a good book.
