A Month of Christmas Activities

A months worth of Christmas activities to do with children through the month of December.The Christmas season comes and goes so quickly; I’ve found over the past few years that it is incredibly helpful to plan ahead for this season – and in planning to keep things simple and to do things that foster good memories of time spent together.

This year we will be doing three main Christmas activities through the month of November;

1: our gum countdown

2: following the characters in the genealogy of Jesus Christ through a story-per-day

3: 24 days of secret Christmas activities in a bag, one to open each day.

Gum Countdown

Advent Calendar from two packs of gum
The Christmas gum countdown gives the boys a tangible way to figure out how many more days until Christmas and lets them indulge in their favorite treat every day. This was a *huge* hit with them last year – Judah still has his empty gum package in his treasure box!lego christmas countdown

{update – 2013 was a Lego door Christmas countdown and was very popular with the boys!}

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

The Genealogy of Jesus a Countdown to Christmas
Our study on the genealogy of Jesus Christ is going to involve a daily reading {it’s all written! will share the first one the evening of the 30th!} and we will look at one character in the line of Christ from December 1 – 24 and on Christmas day we will read His story. I thoroughly enjoyed writing this and am looking forward to sharing this series. It doesn’t do justice to the stories, but it will do to walk my boys through the men and women in the genealogy of Christ.

Secret Christmas Activities

A months worth of Christmas activities to do with children through the month of December.And then our Christmas activities – I just love this. We’ve done it for a couple years now but I don’t think I’ve shared it before. 24 paper bags, each one with directions or supplies for special Christmas activities, one per day from December 1 til Christmas eve.

A few will be our weekly “family night” activity and are also specially marked. But for the most part they are able to pick any bag and we will all be surprised with what the daily activity holds!

Some of the Christmas activities we will be doing include:

  1. Thanks for the ideas! I am looking forward to our countdown to Christmas as well!! I can't wait to read your posts on the geneology!

  2. I love all your ideas! What a lot of energy you have to organize all this! Your blog looks great, too. My young married kids like the white backgrounds for blogs and the look you have. I'm no expert, but I think it looks very good. Congratulations! And enjoy all these ideas! I'll look forward to the genealogy especially.

    • Thanks Sharon! And really, it may have been an investment of energy on this end of things, but through the course of December it will make things run MUCH smoother and be much less work 🙂
