Bird Seed Pinecone Ornaments

DSC_5034dOne of our activities in our countdown to Christmas Lego house this week was to build pine cone ornament bird feeders for the birds. I had a small collection of large and small pine cones from previous nature walks, and we also ended up using a cool stick the boys found in the backyard. They thought the stick looked a bit like reindeer antlers and they thought the birds would enjoy sitting on the branches.

I did a bit of reading to make sure peanut butter was ok for birds to digest before we did this and what I found was that plain peanut butter can be hard for some small birds to digest so mixing peanut butter with corn meal is recommended. I read everything from 1/2 cup cornmeal mixed with 1 cup of peanut butter to 5 cups of cornmeal mixed with 1 cup of peanut butter. {If anyone actually has an idea of what it should be, I would love to know!}

I used two large trays – one was for applying the peanut butter and cornmeal mix and the other was full of bird seed. It worked SO well to just roll the peanut butter laden pine cones in a large tray.

To hang we used jute and S hooks and hung them from our front porch. Beaded pearls and red yarn completed our festive offering to the birds. This coming week these will be drawn into our nature journals. Bird seed peanutbutter pinecone ornament DSC_5032 DSC_5034 DSC_5037a DSC_5050 DSC_5052 DSC_5053 DSC_5054 DSC_5057 DSC_5063 DSC_5065
