Fun with Egg Molds
2012
We eat a lot of eggs in our house. Like a lot a lot. Hard boiled. Fried. Poached. Sunny side up. Scrambled. Egg casserole {thanks for the recipe Becky!}. Omelets. Egg salad… eggs are versatile, cheap, easy to prepare and filling.
A few weeks ago I found these fun egg molds – for $3 including shipping I thought it a worthwhile venture. Since we eat so many eggs I thought we might have a bit of fun with fish and car shaped eggs!I have long admired bento style lunches -just from afar, as I could never justify spending the time and energy on something that gets eaten moments later – and really could never compete with the amazing-ness others come up with. But as soon as the egg molds arrived I made a batch of hard boiled eggs, made two fish and two cars {sadly, no picture of them!} and then arranged them in a scene on the boys dinner plates. It was fun, and the boys enjoyed it!
Since that first car and fish egg shaped dinner we’ve used the egg molds several more times, but never with any effort to create a “back drop” for the eggs. They’re fun all on their own!
The egg molds are made from a sturdy plastic and are simple to use. Once you have a hard boiled egg you carefully peel it while it’s still warm, stick the peeled egg in the mold and snap the mold shut. You can stick it in an ice bath or the fridge to help it set.
The fish shaped eggs in the image above are a bit rough looking – they were the first two I made and ones created since then look more polished. {I think I hadn’t let them cool long enough in the egg molds!}
