Nature Walk & Poetry Scavenger Hunt
2013
This weekend the boys begged for a nature walk around the neighborhood. I didn’t want to collect pieces of nature on our walk, and yet I wanted a little bit more than to simply observe it as we walked around the neighborhood.
So we made up a poem before our nature walk. {a simple, simple poem.} I wrote one line and had the boys finish the second line with a rhyming word. And then on our nature walk they looked for the things from our poem and we took pictures of what they found.
Here is the poem we used – the boys words are the second line of each rhyme, the lighter colored font.
I tried to stump them with the word “fast” … and clearly they met the challenge with their own idea of poetic licence with the word “still”.
It was really so much fun – combining getting outdoors, nature, rhyming and creativity – and will be an activity we repeat – it would have been a fun activity to have done on our road trip last week too!

I really like this idea, Jessica! I’m going to “pin” it to my grandma ideas board. Another idea might be to find things that rhyme with words. For example: rug: so you have to find something that rhymes with that which in this case would be easy–a bug. Would that work?

Thanks Sharon, and that is a good idea too to just have them find things that rhyme with. Would be easier for younger children!
