Immersing Children in the Word of God – Audio Bible
2011
They spend hours each day creating wonderful Lego creations – contraptions that can fly, drive and float, things to explode when dropped from great heights, things to delight their mama’s heart. They are blessed to have generous Uncles with a large Lego collection saved from their own childhood.
While my children are quite capable of keeping their hands busy for hours at a time it hit me a few weeks ago that this would be the perfect opportunity to play an audio Bible in the background to engage their minds as they kept their hands occupied.
There is this man that comes to our church a few times a year and speaks - every.single.time that he does he emphasizes the importance of immersing ourselves in scripture. He has faithfully encouraged us through his own testimony and with sharing how his 11 year old son has listened to the Bible on MP3 almost a dozen times!
We had purchased this Audio Bible a couple of weeks earlier but hadn’t done anything with it. So on the day of my realization that Lego time + audio Bible would be an awesome combo I started it and I am so thankful for that man’s continual encouragement.
It is so easy to hear someone mention something once and think it is a good idea and do nothing about it. It is much harder to hear about it over and over again and think it a good idea over and over again and do nothing about it.
There are many free downloads of the Bible available – I love the one we got, the voices are interesting and easy to listen to {and we did not pay Amazon’s asking price for it! We purchased it through Audible.com.
Here is one place the offers a free download of the Bible with many version options available. The one we use is a dramatization and it has captured the boys attention – even through more challenging books like Numbers!
Our schedule is simple and easily allows us the ability of spending a couple hours each morning doing this. Most week day mornings we spend anywhere from 1-3 hours listening to the Bible as we play or clean. The greatest effort required is opening the music player and hitting play – which some days can actually feel like a lot of work!
Even if you don’t have that amount of time in your day I would encourage you to find some time each day and try this with your own family – it has been so worthwhile with my boys and such encouragement to our family to simply surround ourselves with the Word of God while we go about quiet activities.
It’s slow going, but we’re working on memorizing Colossians 3 this summer. I had the privilege of listening to Tim Tebow’s mother speak a couple months ago and she shared how she strove to teach her children long portions of scripture when they were young. Judah and Wesley do quite well with the individual verses we have worked on, so I took her encouragement to heart and decided to work with the boys on a longer portion of scripture. We chose Colossians 3 at the recommendation of a friend and it has proven to be an excellent starting place for chapter memorization. The plan is to complete it before school starts.

I was over on Crayon Wishes and Popsicle Dreams reading her post on one of your posts from last year and I mentioned Colossians 3. I think that God is drawing me back to this part of the bible for a reason:)
We have been working on bible verse memorization. With Sunday school for the early service being on a summer break, I was thinking of doing more memorization work. I think that a chapter is a great idea!
Hi Jessica,
I'm a complete stranger to you, but I found your blog while searching for information on Raymond Dibble, your great-grandfather. I am an American, born and raised on farm in Central Illinois. However, my husband is from Nigeria and is the grandson of a man your great-gradfather led to the Lord many years ago. It's kind of a long story. I would love to email you to get any more information either from you or other family members on your grandfather or great grandfather. My husband and I want to know the history to pass along to our children as well!
I also wanted to say that we was very sorry to hear that your Grandmother passed away, but we are rejoicing to know that she's in Heaven with the Lord Jesus she served!
I look forward to hearing from you. My email address is ochenjelefamily@yahoo.com

I am working through Colossians too, but as you said it is a little slow going, but ever so profitable! Thanks for the download!

I love this post! Our family has been working on memorizing several different Psalms lately but I think Colossians is where we will go next. Do you have any ideas for fun ways to memorize (especially for busy, busy little boys
) I love the idea about listening to the Bible during lego time — brilliant!!
