Happy Birthday Wesley!
2011
Dear Wesley ~
I can’t even write your name without getting a big goofy grin on my face. You are a delightfully weird child and your presence is thoroughly enjoyed by all in our home.
To company that walks through our doors you like to show them how you can stand on your head, you invite them to jump on the trampoline with you and when they use the bathroom you stand right outside the door and attempt to keep the conversation flowing.
To those of us who are blessed to live with you you lovingly bestow us with random licks on our elbows, shoulders and knees. You hug with every fiber of your being. And you often nuzzle your nose in close to one of us, give a good, long sniff and say with great enthusiasm; “Mmm, what is that GOOD smell?”
You dance, offbeat, to music playing in your own head.
I don’t want you to lose the ability to be so completely yourself – so comfortable with the person God created you to be. Sometimes at night when you are praying you thank God for your own self – you thoroughly enjoy being the person God made you; it is refreshing and precious to observe you relish your enjoyment of yourself as God’s precious creation.
I pray that you will conform yourself only to those things that are pure and lovely and honoring to God.
I have thoroughly enjoyed life with you as a two year old. You put your entire being into whatever it is you are doing – at 2.5 you day and night time potty trained yourself in a five week span – moving straight into big boy underwear. You laugh with gusto, compelling those around you to do the same. When you speak you often get so wrapped up in what you’re saying you trip over your words and start over 5 or 6 times before you finally get everything out.
You have this incredible ability to make people feel good about themselves – whether it be that you compliment your mother on a humble plate of beans saying with passion; “Mmm, mommy! This is just wonderful.” Or you tell an old lady at the grocery store that you like the bunch of bananas that she picked out or you admire the muscles of men doing construction work- you find unique ways of encouraging others and it is a special gift that I hope you continue to exercise and mature through your childhood and beyond.
One of the most spectacular adventures we shared this past year was when you, Judah and I went to Nigeria. While there I watched you thrive in that boy friendly world of dirt, trees and a constant swarm of children loving on you. While your memories of the trip seem scattered and few, I know it was a time of incredible growth for you - in the 5 weeks we were there I watched you mature, I watched as you passionately loved people and passionately played; exercising your imagination to entirely new depths which have carried on here at home.
Sweet boy, you are now three. I hope the belly laughs grow louder. That the hugs grow tighter. That conversations with house guests grow deeper.
I pray that your passion for life will be firmly cemented with a passion for bringing God glory.
And that you will know that I love you upside down and backwards.
xoxo,
mommy
