God’s Word :: day 27

I still have so many thoughts on things we could be communicating to our children!! There are so many good things to pass on; ideas to inspire them, truths we want to drive them, practical helps we want to make their lives a bit simpler … today I want to share about communicating God’s Word to our children.

I shared about family devotions a couple months ago and have talked about how we use the audio Bible during play time (we are on our second time through the Bible in this form this year and I can promise you, I am not very diligent at hitting play on the ipod to get it started! We go WEEKS without listening to it!!) Earlier this year I shared how I had been encouraged by the thought that even though we are to tell our children He is the one who does the writing on their hearts. Also related to this subject of communicating to our children about God’s word is How to Teach Young Children to Memorize God’s Word and Resources for Memorizing Bible Verses.

Earlier in this series I wrote about giving our children an excitement for the Word of God and shared a Bible themed dinner we did to help bring the lives of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to life for the boys.

I spent a bit of time collecting a few of our favorite Bible resources and putting them on the right hand side bar {scroll down a bit til you see it!} These are books, movies or audio cds that we have used and appreciated for the truths of God word that they share. I have more we enjoy, and I have been collecting recommendations from trusted friends, and shall one day be coordinated enough to do a post on good Bible resources for kids. One day.

There are so many ways we can expose our children to God’s word; different seasons, different personalities, different schedules will dictate the various methods and extent of effort we are putting out – but the important thing is that we diligently strive to share God’s word with our children.

Sometime last year I had the idea of combining some verses as sort of a prayer for the boys – I printed it and hung it right inside their bedroom door so I see it several times a day and am reminded to pray these things for them and they know that it is there and what it says.

{I was actually inspired to redesign the print this evening, so this is the new copy! I haven’t printed it yet, but the original file is huge as I’ll be printing it as a 14×14. This one below has been shrunk down to fit online, but should print just fine as a 5×5. If you want the larger file send me an email and I will be happy to email it or upload to another source for ease of access!}

Dear sons –
My prayer for you is that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind.
That you would rejoice in the Lord always.
That you will be able to look back at your life and remember that the Lord your God led you.
I pray that you will delight yourself in the law of the Lord and that you will meditate on it day and night.
That you will have an undivided heart and that which was to your profit you will consider loss to Christ.
I pray that you will take seriously the charge to “go into all the world and preach the gospel.”
That to all people and in all situations you will be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.
And in all circumstances I pray that you will do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you God.
