Communicating an Excitement for the Word of God to our Children
If we, as the parents, believe that God’s word is true there is much we can do to communicate to our children an excitement for the word of God. And while I am still learning and collecting ideas and figuring out what works in our family I am both convinced of the importance of communicating an excitement for the word of God to our children and I am so thankful for those who have shared their own practical ideas with me.
Do our children see us committing time to reading God’s word ourselves?
Do our children hear us speaking about God’s word with a passion and excitement?
The other day a friend of mine wrote this on Facebook :
What if we treated our Bibles like our cell phones. Never went anywhere without them, felt lost if we forgot them and would go back to anywhere to get them, checked it 500 times throughout the day just to see if someone was saying something important that you didn’t want to miss. Maybe He is…
As parents are we communicating to our children that our cell phones are more important than God’s word?
Do our children know God’s word for themselves?
Do we invest time, research and money to find quality books, movies, music and audio books that help communicate an excitement for the word of God?
Do we tell our children stories that point them to Christ?
A few months ago I had the privilege of sitting under the teaching of a woman who was encouraging parents to act out Bible stories with their children, to include as many elements as possible to really draw in the children’s senses and to help them see these stories in the Bible are real.
In school we’ve been studying the patriarchs and so for dinner the other night we had Abraham (Judah), Isaac (Wesley) and Jacob (Paul) dress up for dinner and eat and talk as authentically as we could imagine.
The conversation included experiences that each of those men would have had, stories that had occurred before this period in time (I think this is important; it really helps cement Bible timelines in their minds!) and then they discussed what they would name their camels and who would win a camel race. It was fun, silly and laid back and at the same time helped reinforce facts and made God’s word exciting and a bit more real.
In conclusion I thought I would share some of the fun from that evening ::

Jessica, I have enjoyed all of the posts in your series…they have all spoken to me so much…sometimes the very thing I needed to hear that very day
But this one is truly amazing! What a wonderful way to bring the stories of the Bible alive for your kiddos! And that quote from your friend on fb…how powerful! I'll never pick up my cell phone or sit at this computer again without that thought running through my mind!
My recent post Frugal Photo Friday: Kids’ Embellishments from Scraps
Thanks Cindy! I appreciate the encouragement … and yes, found that quote convicting too!
